Neighborhood Treasures and Pleasures: Restaurante Plaza Barcelona

Learning a new cuisine is one of the best parts of traveling. After all, travel is supposed to be an adventure, filled with new sights and experiences. Every neighborhood has its favorite local spot, and the L’Hospitalet neighborhood is no different. Restaurante Plaza Barcelona is located on a residential tree-lined street well away from the hustle and bustle of the usual tourist spots. The small café is stylish, inviting, and comfortable, giving the perfect opportunity to enjoy authentic Catalan and Spanish foods in a non-touristy atmosphere. However, if a homesick traveler is looking for a burger and fries, they’ve got it covered.

Real Catalan and Spanish Food

Like most restaurants in Barcelona, Plaza opens early for breakfast and closes late in the evening after serving dinner and tapas with lunches and snacks served in between. There is no terrace of this restaurant, but it has a warm and inviting interior that is perfect for relaxing and enjoying authentic Catalan cooking. A few dishes to get you started are:

  • Empanadilla: These pastries look like large turnovers with rolled edges and thick dough and filled with everything from vegetables and cheese with tomatoes, peppers, and tuna.
  • Utifarra: Uncured spiced sausage served either as a main course or as a tapa – it’s delicious with pa amb tomaquet.
  • Pa amb tomaquet: Otherwise known as “pan con tomate” or tomato bread. This dish is exactly how it reads – bread rubbed with tomato, then drizzled with olive oil and salt.

Please make sure to look at the offerings of the day, typically presented on a chalkboard at the front door. Menus may vary with the season, but expect excellent cuisine and service with a laid-back local vibe.
